Philosophy of Professional Masters Level Nursing Practice

Each individual nurse has their own theory and philosophy on how they define nursing practice. Often, we glean attributes from people we look up to either in our field of practice or in our life. My grandmother taught me that everyone was worthy of love and care. The best nurses I have known and aspire to emulate were pragmatic but always believed that patients were more than the diagnoses on the chart. Professors and teachers have encouraged impartial treatment, collaboration with coworkers, and maintaining an evidenced based practice.
My philosophy on patient care is built on the fact that everyone deserves a competent, confident, and compassionate attitude from providers. The victim and the criminal both deserve the same level of professionalism. The priest and the parishioner should be the same in my eyes as they are within our Lord’s eyes. It will not always be easy to care for those guilty or accused of horrible acts. When the time comes, the muscle memory will be there and help keep a steadfast stance on fair and ethical treatment.
Collaboration with other professionals will be met with a humble attitude. There is always knowledge to be gained with any interaction. A nursing assistant will be treated with the same respect as a physician. As an advanced nurse practitioner, listening to the patients and others that provide care is necessary develop complete assessments and histories. Obtaining the appropriate diagnoses for patient care often requires different vantage points and not a rigid point of view.
Researching current evidenced based practices will be a full-time job of learning from others and educating oneself. Obtaining the title of Masters Level Practicing Nurse does not negate the responsibility of continuing to gain knowledge in the field. Remaining up to date on medications and their development. Participating in nurse practitioner affiliations on the local, state, and national levels will help to remain up to date with studies being undertaken by colleagues. Obtaining continuing medical education (CME) is dictated by state but should also be accepted as a task advanced practice nurses should perform without being required. The controlled substance training will be required to maintain licensure. Advance practice nurses in the state of Tennessee are also required to maintain a registered nurse license in addition to the advanced practice license.
As a professional master's level nurse, I will practice with integrity, commitment, accountability, civility, and compassion. These are the professional pillars of King University School of Nursing. My practice will be done with the heart of a servant. God designed my life to be a nurse. The process it took to get to this point is filled with years of experience and lessons learned. Becoming an advanced practice nurse will be an honor and a gift that will never be taken for granted.

My Core Values
Core values are the heart of each person. Many believe that core values are developed by the environment in which someone is raised. These same people believe that religion is a mindset also environmentally implanted. My story refutes the environmental control over one’s thoughts and beliefs. Growing up in a home with alcoholic parents, drug addicted brothers, and no church affiliations as a child proves that there is a God, and He provides for me.
My personal core values of integrity, commitment, service, accountability, civility, and compassion were not learned by examples set forth in my home. They were provided by my own belief in my Father that made Himself known to me in the midst of chaos and abuse. I believed in God before anyone was able to teach me about Him.
Though I will admit that watching those around me behave so abhorrently did encourage me to be more civil. It is possible that my environment pushed me to the complete opposite side of the stream from my family. I choose to believe that God plucked my soul from my home and provided comfort in the moments when I was distraught and filled with fear. He whispered words of encouragement that I would someday rise above all that was inflicted upon me.
King’s Core Values are the same values God provided me when I was a young girl. I will honor God, my King, by upholding my personal integrity and commitment to act in His service concerning my new degree. I will allow God to hold me accountable for my actions as I stand in the gap for the patients that are afforded me through my education. Everyone will be treated with civility and compassion regardless of sex, color, identity, religion, or behaviors. My work will all be done in the name of Jesus. He died on the cross for me and saved me from myself and my environment. Honoring Him with my work is the least that I can do.
